Why creative workshops in the workplace?
The creative workshops enable staff to briefly break from professional and personal daily requirements. The employees then return to their tasks in a more relaxed and focused manner.
We just need recovery periods. It is important to finally shift to other thoughts, in order to recharge our own batteries and clear our heads. Just not thinking about work for a few minutes or even an hour is very relaxing. No one is able to concentrate 8 hours straight. When working long hours without a break, the quality of work suffers. What should one do during these micro-breaks? What is the best way to increase productivity? Numerous studies show that artistic activity leads to an increase in the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for positive emotions. As a result, psychological resistance and subjective well-being increase.
Social Market Foundation and the University of Warwick's Center for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy conducted a 700-person experiment in 2015. The researchers have randomly selected people to show a 10-minute comedy movie. They have also provided snacks and drinks. After that, they asked a series of questions to make sure that the "happiness shock" actually made people happy. For the people who were relaxed and happy, the researchers gave tasks to measure productivity. The experiment showed increased productivity with an average of 12%.
Another study from 2016 shows that art, as a form of therapy, improves mental health, and significantly reduces stress. Even if we are not very talented. The study involved 39 students between the ages of 18 and 59 with a diverse ethnic background. To collect data, the researchers offered all participants a one-hour therapy session. They were allowed to model with clay, create collages, and/or draw. The effect on stress reduction was interesting for the study. Saliva samples were taken before and after the sessions to test cortisol levels. Cortisol is an endogenous hormone of the body, which is released during stress. The cortisol levels of the participants were significantly lower after an art session. Some of them even had a 75% lower level of stress hormones.
Active artistic activity leads to an increase in the functional connections in the brain network responsible for resting. As a result, psychological resistance and subjective well-being increase.
Working with your hands can also lower your stress level. Why? Because manual work clears your mind. A 2013 study of 3,500 subjects also found that manual work and cognitive skills are closely related: the more the participants in the study knitted, the better their brain activity was.
Cooking, painting or meditation not only look good in the CV, they also improve our health! Anyone who has no hobbies to compensate for everyday life is more likely to get sick from stress, be it with an actual burnout or with constant infections. A hobby helps to switch off and reduce stress.
That sounds very good and interesting. But the reality looks different! We spend in average more than a third of our waking hours at work! We also need some family time. How and when do we find time for hobbies?
Hobby workshops in the workplace? Could that be the solution?
More and more companies are becoming aware of their responsibility and understanding that they must contribute to health and wellbeing - physically as well as psychologically - in the workplace.
